Hi computer lady,
I read your columns every week and enjoy them. Could you tell me what is a good antivirus and spyware program to use. I have been having trouble with Norton lately. And I was looking for something else.
Hope you can help me. Shirley
Thank you for your question. I would like to know what kinds of trouble you have been having with Norton, only because some kinds of problems won’t be fixed by switching security programs. Often problems with your antivirus program are a symptom of bigger issues with your computer.
I can tell you what I use for antivirus and spyware programs. For Antivirus, I have used AVG for more than 10 years now. In all that time, I have never been infected with any virus. Not only have I never been infected, but I have occasionally attached a hard drive from a customer to retrieve their files, and AVG has removed virus infected files from those drives. Currently, I am using the full security suite, Internet Security 2011, but I just checked their website and they have just released AVG Internet Security 2012. You can learn more and download a 30 day trial at:
In addition to AVG, which is an antivirus program, I use two free anti spyware programs to block known spyware. While you can’t run more than one antivirus program on your computer (they will block each other), you can run certain antimalware programs along side your antivirus.
If you decide to use either of these two programs, please be careful and read everything before you download the files. There are many malicious programs out there trying to trick you into downloading their program instead of the real thing. If the program you downloaded asks you for money, uninstall it at once.
I keep a copy of these programs on a CD and would be happy to install them for you, or even sell you a disk with the correct program on them.
I am confident that if you install these programs, your computer will be safe and virus free for years to come.
