Dear Computer Lady,
I love your information, I would like your advice on purchasing a new computer.
Is this the time of year, what model and version of windows would you recomend, what store the best?
I would appreciate all the help, even if you say wait till the first of year.
Thanks alot, Nancy
While I can’t give you an exact model of computer to purchase, I can tell you what to look for.
The speed of your computer is determined by two things, the processor and the RAM. I would suggest that you look for a computer with a quad core processor. Quad core means that there are actually 4 processors on the chip, all running at the same time. Think about it this way, you can fill a pool with one water hose, and it will take a long time. If you use 4 hoses, you can fill it in 1/4 the time.
The amount of RAM determines how many things the computer can work on at once. I would suggest at least 6GB (gigabytes) of RAM. Stay away from computers that only come with 2GB of RAM. My work computer has 16GB of RAM.
For the operating system, I would go with Windows 10. It doesn’t make sense to go with an older operating system, since you would need to upgrade at some point.
Storage space on your computer, (your hard drive) should be at least 500GB, most computers will have a 1TB (terabyte) hard drive.
If you are going to do graphics work, gaming, or watch a lot of videos, then you probably want a graphics card with extra memory on the card.
As for where to purchase the computer, I would suggest a store with a good return policy (just in case you get a lemon) and a store that you know you can get good support at.
It’s Your Turn: What do you think?
