Do I Use Speech Recognition Programs?

Dear Computer Lady,

I’m somewhat of a computer nerd myself (now 87 years old) and have been a local tutor to my fellow seniors here in the Sarasota area for almost 20 years, and your column is always entertaining.

But I did want to ask: with all you have on your plate, do you still sit at the keyboard and type your column? The thought occurs to me that perhaps you use a speech recognition program (ala Dragon Naturally Speaking) and dictate your material? Would love to know, and, also, if you have the time to reply, what you liked or didn’t like about it (if, that is, you do actually use it)

Many thanks, Dick

Dear Dick,

I do not use a speech recognition program.

I have used them in the past, although just to test them out, not to increase my productivity.

I can touch type, and while I won’t win any speed typing awards, I can type as fast as I can think of what I want to write.

All the speech recognition programs that I have tried are prone to mistakes, and the time it takes to go back and correct those mistakes, makes it take longer than just typing the column as I compose it in my head.

Hope this helps answer your question.

Elizabeth
