What is the difference between Restart and Reboot?

Dear Computer Lady:

Do “restart” and “reboot” mean the same thing?

I see both terms used, but am not sure if there’s a difference between them.

Thank you for all you do! Mrs H.

Dear Mrs. H,

Yes, restart and reboot both mean that you shut the computer down, and then start it back up again.

Sometimes turning your computer on is referred to as, “Booting” your computer, which is where the term, “reboot” comes from.

I’m glad you asked this question!
