Dear Computer Lady,
I just purchased a new computer with Windows 10. My previous computer was Windows 7 and I was able to click on “from” in the email and all the incoming emails would be sorted in alphabetical order based on who they were sent from. I could also sort by date or subject.
I am now using Windows 10 and can’t find a way to sort my emails. Do you have an answer?
Thanks for all you do! Elaine
Dear Elaine,
First, Microsoft created Outlook Express for email, and people loved it. Then, Microsoft discontinued Outlook Express and replaced it with Windows Live Mail.
Windows Live Mail didn’t have as many features as Outlook Express, but over time many people came to depend out it for their email.
Now, Microsoft has discontinued Windows Live Mail and replaced it with their Mail app in Windows 10.
The Mail app has even fewer features than previous Microsoft mail applications, and one of the features that is gone is the ability to sort the messages like you described. The Windows 10 mail app is so limited that I don’t recomend using it at all. Instead, I have been setting up the open source email program, Mozilla Thunderbird for my customers who upgrade to Windows 10.
By switching to Thunderbird, you gain the functionality of a ful featured email program, and since it is not dependent on Microsoft, you will not have to learn to use a new program every couple of years.
I know this probably wasn’t the answer you were looking for, but I hope it helps you find a good email program that will work for you.

Elizabeth, I had Thunderbird by Mozilla on this Windows 10 laptop and I experienced TWO problems with it. (01) I always got 2 copies of outgoing mail in my “Sent” folder. (02) Worse than that, I always made sure to send forwards to my distribution list in the “Bcc” section of the header but they were delivered to the recipients with all addresses fully exposed in the “To:” section instead. I also had Thunderbird installed on my Windows Vista backup laptop! Same problem with it there! I finally gave up and uninstalled it on BOTH laptops and opted to settle for the new and improved Outlook.com webmail for ALL my devices!!! Any idea of what could be causing this unacceptable glitch? I don’t recommend Thunderbird at all. Too many times I have seen it corrupt emails and they are effectively history. I have seen it change settings with NO human input etc. And no, the computers in question did not contain malware or viruses.
I’d recommend Postbox. Yes, there is a small charge but by golly what a WoNdEfFuL programme.
