Lost Yahoo Address Book

Dear Computer Lady,

My password was “compromised” {yahoo’s word}.

My “My address book” has disappeared. Any way I can get it back? I just got access to my email today (been 3 days now.)

Thanks, Stan

Dear Stan,

Free email accounts like you have with yahoo, and I have with gmail, and many others have with hotmail are great because they are free, and convenient because you can access them from anywhere, but there is always a risk becauseā€¦ well, because they are free.

When you pay a company to provide you with an email address, they are going to provide a certain amount of support when you are having problems with the account. Companies that provide thousands of free email accounts, don’t have the resources to provide good support when you have problems with the account.

I don’t have a way for you to get your address book back. You will probably never know just how your password was compromised, or what caused your address book to disappear.

I would use the many free email services that are out there to make life more convenient, but never store valuable information in them, and always have a backup of things like your email address book.

For Bell sympatico email (hosted by Windows Live) there is an option to export contacts to a .csv file which can be loaded into a spreadsheet or wordprocessing program. I imagine Yahoo has a similar feature but it’s likely buried somewhere.

    This happened to me also.
Check your “sent” items – I found all my contacts in there – whoever spammed my email, had forwarded the contacts to himself. You will probably also find the email of the person who did the deed in there. Mine was a Google address and I emailed Google to complain. Did not get an answer.
