OE Outbox Messages Stuck

Dear Computer Lady,

All of my email that I try to send accumulates in my outbox.

I have a windows XP. I use outlook express.

I send email and then have to get in outbox and click send and then delete it so it isn’t sent twice. I have called frontier, they told me to call outlook express and they sent me to compaq. They wanted to charge me a terrible price for a technician because the warranty is gone.

First, I want to thank you for including the version of Windows and email program you are using. This makes it easier for me to help you with your problem.

Outlook Express does have a tendency to become corrupt after a while. There are a couple of ways to approach this problem, the first one might work, and the second one will definitely work, but it is a much bigger change for you.

The first thing to try is to delete the outbox folder and let Outlook Epxress create a new one. If you are having this problem because the outbox is corrupt, this should fix the problem.

To find your outbox, go to Outlook express and in the menu bar click on “Tools” and then “Options”.
In the Options dialog box, click on the “Maintenance” tab, then click on the button labeled, “Store Folder”.

The store folder will display where your files are stored. Copy the location, then close all the open windows, and also close Outlook Express.

Next, click on “Start” and then “Run”. Paste the folder location that you copied in the run window, and press the “enter” key on your keyboard. This should open the folder containing your email files. Find the one named, Outbox and delete it.

Open Outlook Express back up, and see if this has fixed your problem.

If this first solution does not work, I would suggest that you go to Microsoft’s web site and download the latest version of Windows Live Mail. Once you have installed Windows Live Mail, use that instead of Outlook Express.

    I also had a similar problem using Windows Vista and Outlook email. Every time I sent a larger message it would sit in my Outbox and show that it never actually went anywhere. However, people were receiving the message many many times. I would have to go in and manually hit Delete between the times that it was trying to Re-Send it yet again. Ugh.
    Here’s what I did:
    I had to increase the Server Timeout to give it a chance to leave the Outbox.
    So – Under TOOLS, ACCT SETTINGS, the E-MAIL ACCOUNT SETTINGS tab, I highlighted my personal email name/type line – clicked on it – then went to the MORE SETTINGS box and clicked. Next I clicked on the ADVANCED tab – then I increased the SERVER TIMEOUTS slider to give the computer more minutes to send my messages (I changed it to 4 minutes). I OK’d my way back and this did the trick.
    Now my messages receive and send just fine. (I am not sure if this had been happening because my hard drive is getting fuller/older or whether it has something to do with the speed of our “High Speed” internet connection here in the country, but now it works fine!)

    I would also suggest that users switch to Thunderbird from Mozilla.com, a free and very well done e-mail client. It works far better for me than Outlook Express or any other Windows e-mail client ever did. Remember that Outlook is often called “Lookout” due to its bad behavior!
    I have used Thunderbird since about 2000, and never had a problem.
