Dear Computer Lady,
My computer reboots itself without warning 2-3 times a week. I’m not doing any one thing when this happens. It’s happened when I clicked a link in my browser, when I was simply reading something online, and when I was making a graphic. Other times too, I’m sure, but those are the instances I recall. One time recently it rebooted itself just a minute or two after I started it up.
I don’t think it’s a maintenance update as I get warnings when it does those. I’ve searched and searched for a fix, but to no avail. It seems to be a Windows 10 problem that affects many, but no one (that I could find) has a solution.
Thank you for your wonderful newsletter. I’ve been a fan for many years!
This is probably a hardware issue. A hard one to isolate though.
It could be the power supply, or the RAM or the motherboard. What to do depends on the age of the computer, and how much money you want to put into finding an answer.
Do you have your computer plugged into a good UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)?
Sometimes the power can fluctuate just enough to cause your computer to restart, but not enough that you might notice the lights flicker or need to reset the clock on your microwave. A UPS would switch to battery quickly enough to fix the problem.
If you are confident that it is not a power issue, bring it into your local computer repair shop for some diagnostics.
They will probably reseat the RAM, run some hardware diagnostic software, and possibly even replace the power supply. Hopefully, you will find an inexpensive fix for your computer.
It’s Your Turn: What do you think?
