Dear Computer Lady,
I am having rrouble with my “Num Lock” key.
It seems it turns itself off and if I don’t notice that the num lock light is “off” and use the number keys, they do not work (print).
Is there a way to fix this problem?
Thanks for your help, Joe
Normally, Windows is supposed to remember what position the num lock key is in, and put it back in the same position when you start your computer back up.
If your num lock key is only resetting when you turn your computer off and then back on, then the problem with probably with Windows itself.
There is a registry key for keeping the num lock key on or off when Windows starts, but editing the registry is not for beginners, and can cause your computer to stop working if you make the wrong changes so I am not going to give directions here. (you can find directions if you search online)
You might also want to go to the power settings in the control panel and turn off “Fast Startup”. This sometimes helps windows get all the settings right when it is starting up.
If the num lock key is resetting more often, while you are using the computer, I would suspect a problem with the keyboard. Try using a different keyboard. If you are using a laptop, you can always plug in a USB keyboard just to troubleshoot the problem.
Hopefully, this will help you with your problem.
