Dear Computer Lady,
I have a dell laptop with vista. Whenever I type a letter t, a new tab opens up. I know there must be a simple solution, but I can’t figure it out.
I am not sure if there is a simple solution for your laptop or not, but I can give you some pointers for troubleshooting the problem.
Let’s start with the actual keyboard shortcut for opening a new tab in Internet Explorer. If you hold down the Ctrl key (located in the bottom left corner of your keyboard) and press the letter T you will open a new tab.
Now that we know that this is the shortcut you are activating every time you type the letter T, we need to figure out what is causing this shortcut to be activated.
1. It could be that you are accidentally pressing on the Ctrl key every time you reach to type the letter T. Try typing and pay attention to where your hand is resting on the keyboard. Also make sure you are not leaning on the keyboard when you are typing.
2. The Ctrl key on your keyboard might be stuck. Since this is a laptop, it could be a difficult problem to fix, but you can test the theory by plugging in a USB keyboard and see if the same problem occurs. If you don’t have the problem while using an attached keyboard, you can use the keyboard to type. Replacing a laptop keyboard would be difficult and expensive.
3. If you have determined that the problem is with the laptop keyboard being stuck, and the laptop is still under warranty, make sure you files are backed up, then call the manufacturer and see if they will fix it under warranty for you.
