Turn Off Power Saving

Dear Computer Lady,

I wonder if you can solve this problem for me;

I have Windows XP, SP2, AOL Broadband.

If I leave my computer on line and return after 10 – 15 minutes I find that( sometimes) the Screen is black and the monitor light has changed to amber, I can hear the tower still running, the computer will not accept signals from the mouse or keyboard, the CD tray will open on request, but the DVD tray will not, I cannot close down the computer even by holding down the `Start` button for 10 seconds. I have to switch off by using the switch at the back of the tower. I have checked the monitor on a different computer, it works fine.  I have left the computer switched off for a day or so and restarted normally only for it to fail when left unattended, exhibiting exactly the same problems.

Your help would be appreciated.  Ken

Dear Ken,

Without testing the computer, I cannot be absolutely sure, but I am guessing that the power saving features of the computer are not working correctly. The best way to test this theory is to turn them off and see if it makes a difference.

1. To turn off the power saving features, right click on a blank spot on your desktop and click on “Properties” to open the display properties window. You can also open this window by opening the control panel and clicking on “Display”.

2. In the “Display Properties” window, click on the “Screen Saver” tab.

3. On the Screen Saver page, click the “Power” button near the bottom of the page.

4. On the “Power Schemes” page, make sure all the selections for turning off the monitor, disks and standby, say “Never”.

Click “OK” at the bottom of the window, and click “OK” again in the screen saver window to save your changes.

This will probably solve your problem.
