[ad] Dear Computer Lady,
I am running Windows 7 and my browser is Mozilla Firefox….
On my Dell Inspiron 17 laptop, I keep getting a flashing white screen. I have to shut the lid on the laptop, turn my laptop back on, and log in again. This is getting very frustrating. At no specific time does this happen, but I have to shut the lid each time it does happen, start the computer back up and log in again. Do you have any idea what is causing this and can I fix it or do I need to take it to a computer shop to get fixed? The laptop is about 4-5 yrs old…should I be thinking about investing in a new laptop?
Thank you in advance! Susie
Without taking a look at your laptop, I can’t tell you exactly what is going on, but I can give you a few possibilities.
This definitely sounds like a hardware problem. My best guess is that the laptop is either overheating, or the graphics adapter is starting to go, or some combination of heat causing the graphics adapter to have problems.
Since you are looking at a hardware problem on a laptop, there are two things to consider; is it possible to replace the component that is malfunctioning, and is it going to be cost effective to replace the part.
On most laptops, the hard drive and RAM can be easily accessed and replaced, while most other components are either not replaceable, or too costly to replace. I don’t believe that your problems are being caused by either the RAM or the hard drive.
If you really want to know for sure, you can take your laptop to a local computer shop like mine and for a small diagnostic fee they should be able to pinpoint the problem for you. Keep in mind though, that the average computer usually lasts about 5 years, so it might just be time to replace the computer.
