Do I Need a Firewall?

Dear Computer Lady,

I have been using the free version of AVG. Recently I downloaded a trial version of Internet Security and it is going to run out tomorrow. I have tried to buy the AVG Internet Security 2014 -it does have the firewall activation where the free version does not.

The payment transaction shows up from AVG’s bank in Europe and my bank denied the charge until they called and explained the situation. I am VERY nervous about doing a transaction overseas!

Is the free AVG version enough or do I need to find something that includes a firewall protection? Thank you for your help and swift reply.

Dear Connie,

AVG is located overseas, but it is a legitimate company. If you want to be absolutely sure that you are ordering from the right website, use the affiliate link on my website at: it is in the left-hand column just below the menu.

As far as the free version vs the Internet Security version, I would go with the Internet Security. It protects against more than just simple viruses. There are so many threats out there that you need a full featured protection program.

I personally use AVG Internet Security and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware on my computer.

When buying something on the web from a company overseas or otherwise not as well know as Amazon or such, I use PayPal. If a company is legitimate enough to set up an account with PayPal, then it probably is ok. A personal PayPal account is easy to set up, free, and it gives you a second level of protection.
