Dear Computer Lady,
I would like to let you know how much I enjoy your newsletter it is very informative and fun to read.
Could you please tell me how to permanently get rid of a tool bar that was put on automatically through another website. I can temporarily remove it but I would prefer to permanently do so.
Thank you kindly and looking forward to your reply,
Rina in Sydney, Australia
Toolbars like you describe are usually installed by spyware software or unethical websites. There are several things you can try to get rid of them.
First, go to the Control Panel, then “Add/Remove Programs” and see if the toolbar is listed there. If it is, click on it, and then click the “Remove” button.
The next thing you can try, is to visit the website that the toolbar came from. Some of these websites have directions for removal, or a tool you can click on to remove the toolbar. I have successfully removed toolbars this way more often than you might think.
If nothing else works, the best way to get rid of them is to use a program that removes spyware.
Spybot – Search & Destroy is a free program than can detect and remove spyware of different kinds from your computer. You can find Spybot at www.download.com just search for “Spybot” and it will be the first entry. Make sure you are using the free program, since some companies try to pretend to be Spybot – Search & Destroy and then want you to pay to use the program.
