How To Sort Photos

[ad]Dear Computer Lady,

I hope you can help me. I have many photos loaded on my computer.

My husband died in December 2012, and I would like to gather the photos of him, all together in one folder, and then send them to a service and have a book made.

Is there an easy way to find all of them? I am running Windows 7. Most of the pictures are not tagged with his name. Also once I find them, can I just drag them into a new folder?

Thanks, Judy

Dear Judy,

There is no easy way that I am aware of to automatically find pictures that contain an individual person. Instead, you will have to look through the pictures yourself.

As you are going through the photos though, you can simply drag the ones you want to a new folder.

The easiest way to do this is to open two folders side by side. One folder will have your photos in it, the other will be the new folder you want to move the pictures of your husband to.

If you’re like me, you have photos all over the place in different folders, etc. I find that a program like Picasa is quite good at organizing all your photos in one place – it scans your computer and then you are able to see all the thumbnails of your photos in one scrolling window, and make your album straight from there. Good luck.

    Hello,
I haven’t used Picasa for a while but I know one copy a few years ago allowed the use of facial recognition. That may help to sort photos of the lady’s husband.

I use Picassa for my photos and have seen a feature that pulls up faces from the pictures and asks you to name the face. After that Picassa will pull all pictures with that face in it. This would make your task of looking for pictures of your husband easier, if you could import the folders into Picassa.

I have no experience with Picassa, but it sounds like the best solution.

If you don’t use it, you can use a simple file name search tile, like the built in “search” in Windows Explorer (the upper right corner) or a 3rd party tool like “Everything” from Void Tools. Personally, I prefer Everything because it does not require the long indexing period. Use the search tool to find all files with the photo file extension you use, probably .JPG . Then you can browse them and copy them to one folder as the Computer lady suggested.
