Should I Upgrade?

Dear computer lady,

I have a Toshiba laptop with XP windows that is about 4 or 5 yrs old,
I have not installed either of the IE 8 or IE 9 updates.

Is it to late to update or will I have trouble now if I do load in the IE 9. Also I was told the IE 8 would only cause trouble with my XP windows. What would be you suggestion?

Thank you so much. Jan

Dear Jan,

Unless you have a compelling reason to install Internet Explorer 8 or 9, I would not upgrade.

The reason is fairly simple, your computer was built with less RAM and processing speed than today’s computers have. Current versions of software like Internet Explorer are written for the computer of today that has dual and quad core processors and 4 to 8 Gigs of RAM.

Often what happens when you upgrade an older computer, is that the computer will run slower as it struggles to keep up with the demand of software written for more powerful machines.

My best advice is that if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.

Elizabeth

I had am HP Pavilion notebook with Windows XP that was 6 years old. I updated IE6 to IE8 and had no problems. IE8 ran faster and is more secure than IE6. And I think Microsoft is ending support for IE6 so upgrading is necessary.
I had to get a new notebook because of drive problems and upgraded the new Dell notebook to IE9 which is real good.
If you are running a computer that is over 4 years old, probably a single core processor with Windows XP, you probably want to upgrade to something new any way. Sites on the Internet are adding more and more junk to their pages which really slow down everything. A new computer really makes the viewing experience better! Windows 7 loads/shut downs real fast! And everything just runs faster and better. I had almost no problems running old programs so there is no real reason for not upgrading to a new computer. It’s Christmas, give yourself a present.
