Vista Won’t Respond in Sleep Mode

[ad]Dear Computer Lady,

After many years of following your newsletter and using things to improve my knowlegde, I now have a question.

I have a HP Computer with a replacement HP monitor. I am running Windows Vista Home Premiun 64-bit edition.

When my computer goes into sleep mode, it will not come back up. I replaced my monitor thinking it was the problem, but I am now having the same thing happen with this monitor. I have noticed that my keyboard and mouse brings not response to bring it back up.

Could you please give me some suggestions of what might be going on. I don’t like to shut down with the off and on button but that is the only way without any response from the components.

Thank you for being here to ask questions, Peggy

Dear Peggy,

I have had this same problem with different computers over the years. For some reason, power management stops working, and the computer won’t respond when you try to wake it up from sleep mode.

The easiest and least expensive way to fix this problem is to change the power settings so that the computer does not enter sleep mode any more.

To do this, click on “Start” and then, “Control Panel”.

In the Control Panel window, click on, “Hardware and Sound”.

In the, “Power Options” section, click on, “Change when the computer sleeps”.

Using the drop down list, change both the, “Turn off the display” and, “Put the Computer to sleep” settings to, “Never” and click the, “Save Changes” button at the bottom of the window.

There are other things that you can try, like a clean install of Windows, but honestly, short of replacing the computer, there is really no fix that is guaranteed to work.
