RAM – Random Access Memory
RAM stands for random access memory. This is a type of memory on your computer that can be accessed randomly, without touching the data that comes before it.
Think of an old fashioned cassette tape. To get to your favorite song, you had to either play or fast forward through the songs before it before you could play your song. Random access would mean that you could get directly to your favorite song without touching the songs before it.
However, unlike your cassette tape, RAM is not used for storage. Ram is volatile, which means that it loses all stored data when the power is turned off.
RAM is faster than storage devices like your hard drive, and is used to hold data that you are currently working on. The more RAM you have, the more things you can work on at once, the faster your computer will be.
RAM is the most common type of memory found in computers and printers.
