Auto Hide Taskbar

Dear Computer Lady,

The bar that pops up at the bottom of my screen – the “task bar” I think it’s called – it’s got the “start” button on the far left side. Well, I can’t get the dumb thing to go away. It used to slide down and away, but not anymore! HELP! What did I do wrong?

Dear Lori,

You are correct, the bar that you are describing is the taskbar.

You used to have it set to auto hide, but somewhere along the line, someone must have changed the setting.

Here is how to change it back.

In Windows XP, Vista and 7:

1. Right click on a blank spot of the taskbar.
2. In the context menu that appears, click on, “Properties”.
3. In the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties dialog box, click to put a check mark in front of “Auto-hide the taskbar.
4. Click the “OK” button at the bottom of the dialog box to close the window and save your changes.

You mentioned that “someone must have changed the setting”, but in my case I am the only user of my computer, but now and then my auto hide isn’t working. When I go to reset it I have to click on show taskbar, OK, then re-enter and click on auto hide again. Sometimes I’ve had to do that several times in the same hour because something was causing auto hide not to work. But I know that I did not “change the setting” and something else was going on. I’m not asking for a solution because you likely don’t have one, I’m just saying that sometimes computers seem to have a mind of their own and settings get changed without our personally changing them.
