[ad]Dear Computer Lady,
Can I download Windows 8.1 on my computer which has Windows XP on it???
I read your newsletter every time I get it in my e-mail..
The answer to your question is, it depends.
Actually, it depends on a couple of different things.
First, does your XP computer have enough hardware power to run Windows 8.1.
If your computer is more than 4 or 5 years old, chances are it does not. According to Microsoft’s website, you need AT LEAST a 1 ghz processor, 2 GB of RAM and 20GB hard drive space along with a graphics card that supports DirectX 9 or greater. These are the minimum requirements to run Windows 8.1 and while it will run, if your system just barely meets these requirements, it will run very slowly and probably be a bit frustrating for you.
If your system does have the hardware power to run Windows 8.1, you still can’t just download and install it, you have to purchase it. Since prices for Windows 8.1 range from over $90. to $150, you have to take that into consideration when deciding if you want to upgrade or purchase a new computer. In addition, you will need to backup your files, since upgrading from Xp to 8 requires a clean installation. This means you won’t be able to keep and files, settings or programs when you upgrade.
I hope this helps you as you transition from your old XP computer to Windows 8.1
