Don’t Skip the Recycle Bin

Dear Computer Lady,

My question is this: When I delete files, etc from my computer they do NOT show up in the recycle bin. I would like for them to so I have that 2nd chance before finally deleting anything. How can I fix this problem?

Thanks so much for your help, Jan

Dear Jan,

When Windows is installed, the default setting is for files to go to the recycle bin when they are deleted. At some point, your settings must have been changed. Here is how to change them back.

On your desktop, right click on the “Recycle Bin” and click “Properties”.

In the “Recycle Bin Properties” window, look for the setting that says “Do not move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted.” Since your computer is not sending files to the recycle bin, this setting is probably checked off. Remove the check mark, and click “OK” at the bottom of the window to save the setting.
