Dear Computer Lady,
In your newsletter dated 1/23/16 your answer states that according to microsoft windows 7 will be good until 1/14/2020
I would like to know if this is still true. windows 10 has automatically downloaded onto a computer at work and it took the boss 2 weeks to get everything straightened out. I’ve been getting notices about 10 asking if I wanted to update. This morning when I came back downstairs it said windows was downloading but it was at 0% so I stopped the download as I was unsure if it was a good thing.
Did I do wrong by stopping? Will 7 be good until 2020? Will I be able to get 10 at all now?
I am so confused about this
Hope you had a nice holiday weekend, Carolyn
Yes, Windows 7 will still be good until January of 2020. You can always check on Microsoft’s website at:
You did not do anything wrong by stopping the windows 10 download, but if you change your mind, you can always opt to download and install it later.
The Windows 10 upgrade will be free to download and install until July 28, 2016. After that, according to Microsoft, if you want to upgrade to Windows 10, you will have to purchase it.
Of course, if you purchase a new computer, it will come with Windows 10 already installed.
If you want to upgrade to 10 before the deadline, but are not sure if you want to keep it, take your computer to your local repair shop (like mine) and have them make a full backup image before upgrading for you. That way, you have all your files backed up in case Windows 10 loses them (I have seen that happen) and you can restore the backup image if you decide Windows 10 is not for you.
