Windows Updates

Dear Computer Lady,

I thoroughly enjoy your column!! I, too, have a question to ask you.

Should I download the Windows update that pops up every day on my wallpaper, or should I just ignore it, as my new Windows is working so well?

Does the old saying hold, “if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it”?

Thank you, Jan

Dear Jan,

Yes, you should download the Windows updates, in fact, it is a good idea to check the update website as well.

The reason you should download your updates, is to protect yourself. If everyone had downloaded all their updates in a timely matter, some of the recent computer viruses would have been unable to infect any computers.

If you are running Windows XP, click on “Start”, point to “All Programs” and click on “Windows Update” near the top of the list.

If you are running Windows Vista, click on “Start”, then “Control Panel”. In the Control Panel window, click on “System and Maintenance” and then click on “Windows Update”.

A quick shortcut in Vista is to press the Windows Logo key on your keyboard and then type “Windows Update” and press enter.

In all versions of Windows, you can check for updates at the Windows Download Center at:
